Welcome to St. David’s!

I would like to offer a very warm welcome to all of the Primary 1 children and their families to St. David’s. It is a very exciting time for the children as they begin their first year in school as Primary One pupils. This term has begun very positively and the children are settling in exceptionally well and are ready to learn new and exciting things.
The children have already begun looking at time as part of mathematics covering aspects such as understanding the days of the week, covering the date each day and through the use of a visual timetable. In terms of numeracy, the children will be learning about numbers from 0 to 10 through drama, music, art and ICT.
For Literacy and English, the children will be employing the whole school cursive handwriting programme and have already started learning how to write some lower case letters. We have also been practising fine motor skills through use of scissors and play-dough as well as a range of other activities.
As you may have seen the children have started the Oxford Reading Tree books for homework. At the moment we are on wordless stories which provide ample opportunities to develop new vocabulary at home by discussing the pictures and asking questions about them. Reading can be encouraged from an early age by creating positive literacy habits at home such as library visits.
Our main focus for Listening and Talking has been Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes. The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring classic stories in depth through many curricular areas. We even made porridge from Goldilocks and the Three Bears – it was just right!
Our science and social studies topics this term are seasons, with main focus on Autumn, and seasonal change. The children will also be learning about water and its formational change.
Our PE days are Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please check that your child has their PE kit (t-shirt, shorts and indoor shoes in a bag) and that their name is on each item of clothing, including shoes.
Autumn Trip – The children will be going on a joint trip to the cinema with P1b and the two Primary 2 classes in November. More details to follow.
Homework will be given out each Monday. Please ensure your child brings their homework bag in to school every day.
I look forward to this year with your children and I hope that the children fulfil their potential goals!
Kind regards,
Miss Lambert.
